The use of IIoT in the mining industry

One of the industries experiencing problems on a global scale is the mining sector. Falling prices in commodity markets affect asset values and debt parameters. Productivity falls as mining becomes more labour intensive and requires bigger investments. To help you optimise your mining operations we can provide a number of engineered solutions to increase profitability, reduce OPEX and CAPEX, and increase production capacity.

Compressor monitoring solution

Howden and IMBU jointly developed the UPTIME system for API 618 reciprocating compressor sets. UPTIME is mostly used on compressors that are indispensable in a refinery process, where downtime often costs hundreds of thousands of dollars per day. IMBU developed the fully hazardous-area-certified plug-and-play hardware kit, allowing quick installation and a very short wire run, along with the server infrastructure and the end-user portal. Howden's fully integrated digital twin is key to performing the automated analytics.

High-level location analytics

A question from an OEM building high-pressure pumps triggered the development of the Smart Bolt. The objective was to give large, high-value parts an identity and a location, readable from a distance of up to 50 metres. Location awareness allows operating hours to be allocated on a parts-individual basis rather than a machine-individual one. The time a part spends in each processing area of the workshop is recorded automatically, satisfying QA requirements. In a large warehouse, counting is automated by a periodic sweep in which all available bolts identify themselves. An ST MEMS chip on board allows intelligent analytics — counting how many times a valve opens and closes, among other things.

All-in-one air quality lab

CabGuard is an air quality lab, jointly developed by IMBU and Dynatec. It provides detailed data on key environmental parameters such as humidity, temperature, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fine dust and CO2. CabGuard's design and features make it suitable for all types of enclosed environments — vehicle cabin, supervisor cubicle, guard post, and up to airplane cabins.

Remote asset performance analysis

Our measurement suitcase includes two transmitters (100% redundant) and two IO modules (fully synchronised). The set-up is self-contained and built into a Pelican suitcase. It can be used for field measurements, temporarily as an option, to investigate machine performance and dynamics. It is typically used on reciprocating machines, as it allows measurements referenced to crank angle.
